New Century Schlbk
Introduction
Introducing STF PowerFax
STF PowerFax
Overview
OSTF PowerFax is a key element of a new era in communications software
a truly
Pcollaborative work group environment. When combined with the built-in messaging
Fand file-sending capabilities of PowerTalk, a powerful and easy to use
;communications system becomes available to Macintosh users.
PStandard PowerTalk addressing protocols are used to send faxes
automatically
Tby simply selecting a user or destination. If the preferred method of communication
Ufor the selected user is fax, the document will be converted to fax format and sent
&without further input from the sender.
QPowerFax places incoming faxes in the user
s mailbox In Tray. A received fax can
Jbe Forwarded as a fax through the STF PowerFax gateway. PowerTalk type-in
Faddressing, available in the Mailer, allows faxes to be sent to a new
temporary
HGaddress by simply typing the fax number into the Mailer. New permanent
4addresses may also be created in a Personal Catalog.
FaxView
Overview
QThe FaxView application is used to view faxes that are received in the Mailbox In
STray. FaxView provides a powerful set of tools for viewing and forwarding received
fax communications.
FWhile viewing, you can use the
magnification
pop-up menu to select a
Tmagnification level from 50% to 2400% of actual size, allowing you to fit the entire
8fax on screen or make even the smallest details legible.
HThe Smooth command makes faxes easier to read, displaying the image with
Tmultiple grayscale levels when a color or grayscale monitor is available. Smoothing
>improves text readability and the clarity of grayscale images.
RAdjustable print-break lines allow selection of any portion of a fax for printing.
OPrint breaks may be placed wherever desired
very useful when extra-long pages
are received.
UYou may select all or a portion of a fax to be copied and pasted into other documents
via the clipboard.
TPage rotation buttons allows fax pages to be rotated or flipped to make it easier to
Qread pages that were received backwards or rotated. Rotating a page 90
left or
Lright from portrait view makes it easier for you to read a fax page when the
>contents (such as a spreadsheet) are in landscape orientation.
JThe Add Mailer command in the Mail menu adds a PowerTalk mailer, making it
Jeasy to forward a copy of a received fax to another address via PowerTalk.

KPowerFax can image and send letters which are selected to be sent in either
Pstandard letter format used in PowerTalk messaging: AppleMail or Snapshot. Any
Qapplication supporting PowerTalk messaging should be able to generate a letter in
Sone of these formats. PowerFax can also send letters which are already in the
format (received or saved faxes).

Preferred Letter Format
OIn general, Snapshot is the preferred format since using this format allows the
Koriginal application to define the page layout. When Snapshot is selected,
SPowerFax will be most likely to maintain the original page layout. Text formatting
((sizes, styles, etc.) will be preserved.
OWhen sending to multiple recipients, selecting multiple formats will allow each
Tgateway, including PowerFax, to send in its preferred format. If available, Snapshot
Nwill be used by PowerFax for sending to the fax addresses. Check the Multiple
LFormats checkbox in the Send dialog and select the formats that may be used.
#Supported File Types for Enclosures
NThe PowerTalk mailer capability for adding enclosures is a very convenient and
Kintuitive method for sending additional information. PowerFax will convert
>enclosures of the supported file types TEXT, PICT, and STF Fax
and append them
to the outgoing fax.
NOTE:
MEnclosures with other file types will be ignored by the fax software, because
PowerFax cannot read them.
H.Supported File Types for Drag-and-Drop Sending

NOTE:
LA letter can not be deleted while it is being converted to a fax. A message
Ksays the file is in use and cannot be deleted. However, when the imaging
Lprocess is completed, the letter will be removed from the Out Tray and a non

Fax Imaging Process
RWhen a letter or file is mailed to a fax address using a PowerTalk mailer or using
Ndrag-and-drop, PowerTalk will deliver the document to PowerFax for processing.
LPowerFax will examine the document and image to fax all the contents that it
recognizes.
QIf the document is a letter, PowerFax will first image the content of the letter,
Lselecting its preferred format when multiple formats are available, and then
Oproceed to image all enclosures of the supported types. Each enclosure will be
Vimaged starting on a new page. If drag-and-drop is used and the file is of one of the
Wsupported types, it will be imaged. In either situation, after conversion is complete,
SPowerFax will image the selected cover page, if any, and add it to the beginning of
Uthe fax. A page header will also be added to the top of each page if the Page Header
0option is checked in the Configuration settings.

AppleMail Format
MAppleMail format does not provide any page layout information. PowerFax will
Opaginate the document based on a 8.5
x 11
paper with identical left and right
6margins of 0.885
and top and bottom margins of 1.25.
OText, styled text, and pictures will be imaged to fax. Text will be drawn left
HUjustified, preserving any style and size changes. The application
s default font and
Pstyle (usually Geneva 12 pt.) will be used if no style information is specified.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
ELetters sent in AppleMail format may contain sound or QuickTime movie
Gclips. These segments will be ignored by the PowerFax software because
;there is no suitable way to represent these items on a fax.
HVA picture that is larger than the usable page size, will be scaled proportionally. To
Pavoid breaking a picture into several pages, PowerFax will first try to place an
Sextremely large picture at the top of a new page, then scale it only enough to fit.
Snapshot Format
RWhen imaging a letter in Snapshot format, the layout is determined by the original
Oapplication. PowerFax will attempt to preserve the page layout of the original
Qdocument. This allows different vertical and horizontal margins to be used up to
%the maximum paper size of 8.5
x 11.
NOTE:
DSome applications that support the PowerTalk mailer do not correctly
Kimplement sending letters in Snapshot format. Send a letter to yourself in
MSnapshot format to test the application. PowerFax expects the application to
send one picture per page.
STF Fax Format
PSending a letter in this format is currently supported by FaxView. Because this
Qformat already contains a fax image, no imaging is required, except when adding a
&cover page or page header information.
Forwarded Letter
OPowerFax will image and send the letter containing the last changes, along with
Iany enclosures added when last sent. Other included changes and previous
Lenclosures will be ignored, just as if you were forwarding a letter with the
AppleMail letter application.
New Century Schlbk
Sending
Sending a Fax
TEXT File Imaging
RWhen a TEXT file is added to a letter as an enclosure or mailed using the drag-and
HQdrop method and the recipient
s preferred address is fax, PowerFax will image the
Xfile for sending. TEXT-format files will be imaged left-justified on an 8.5
x 11
page
Twith identical left and right margins of 0.885
and top and bottom margins of 1.25.
SThe default application style, normally 12 pt. Geneva with plain text face, will be
used.
PICT File Imaging
RWhen a PICT file is added to a letter as an enclosure or mailed using the drag-and
HQdrop method and the recipient
s preferred address is fax, PowerFax will image the
Xfile for sending. A PICT file with a page size less than or equal to 8.5
x 11
will be
Xcentered on the fax page. If the picture is larger, it will be scaled proportionally to
fit within the paper size.
STF Fax File Imaging
RFax files already contain fax images, so no imaging is necessary except to add the
coverpage or page header.

H&Using Other Communicatons Applications
H'Using Other Communications Applications
HWhen using PowerFax with other communications applications a few special
=configuration steps are necessary to ensure proper operation.
Sharing the Serial Port
MWhen PowerFax is set to receive faxes, it must keep the port open and monitor
Gcontinuously for incoming faxes. This can create a conflict with other
Kcommunications applications, such as Apple Remote Access (ARA) or PowerTalk
SDirect DialUp Mail (DialUp), that also need to monitor the port for incoming calls.
HPowerFax, ARA, and DialUp are referred to as
Server-Type
applications.
#The solution to these conflicts is
Line Manager
, a PowerFax component which
manages the
actual
)#" serial port and creates separate
logical
ports (fax, data, and
H.voice) for different Server-Type applications.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
ILine Manager relies on advanced features of certain modems to distinguish
Ibetween various types of incoming calls. You must have a modem with this
#capability, usually referred to as
Call Discrimination
Adaptive Answer
use Line Manager.
With Line Manager
LLine Manager allows the Macintosh to automatically receive fax, Apple Remote
KAccess (ARA) or DialUp calls, and voice messages with a shared modem. When
PLine Manager is available, any attempt by ARA or DialUp to make an outgoing call
;will be put on hold until the fax transmission is complete.
Line Manager creates multiple
logical
)$# serial ports which share the same
physical
HMport. Each logical port simulates the behavior of a physical port. Thus, an
Papplication can use a logical port in the same way it would use a physical port.
MBecause each logical port is associated with certain types of communications
Qapplications, Line Manager can direct an incoming call to the appropriate logical
Wport based upon the type of call. Only one logical port can be be in an active session
Q(using the modem) at any time. The other logical ports will block any attempt to
Ouse the modem. This ensures that an application
s connection with the modem is
=exclusive, and will not be interrupted by other applications.
EXAMPLE:
Line Manager creates an ARA Port
)that can be used for ARA or DialUp. When
NLine Manager detects an incoming data call, it will direct the call to the ARA
'Port, allowing ARA or DialUp to answer.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Only one Server-Type application may be actively monitoring the ARA Port
to answer incoming calls.
Line Manager allows access to the modem for outgoing calls on a first-come,
Pfirst-served basis, making other applications wait for the port if it is in use.
New Century Schlbk
!Other Communications Applications
H&Using Other Communicatons Applications
HTLine Manager will handle port/call transferals differently depending on the relative
awareness
Iof the application. At the time of publication, only ARA and DialUp were
H)compatible with Line Manager for incoming
%data calls. Please check the Release
Notes
Jin the PowerFax
folder for the latest compatibility information. For the
HFpurpose of this explanation, applications are divided into four types:
Type 1
Q Line Manager-aware fax & voice clients. These programs negotiate directly with
XLine Manager to request the port for outgoing calls. Incoming calls are routed to these
applications by Line Manager.
Type 2
J Apple Remote Access and DialUp. Although unaware of Line Manager, these
applications use the
Serial Port Arbitrator
)r) to release the port when the application
9is not using it. Line Manager creates a logical ARA Port
that appears to be a normal
Rserial port, so ARA and DialUp have no idea that their access is being controlled.
Type 3
N Unaware applications (such as AppleLink or MicroPhone
) that know how to use
Rthe Macintosh Communications Toolbox (CTB). This type includes applications such
Mas Compuserve which use CTB connection tools. Line Manager creates a logical
VPort for these applications. When one of these applications attempts to use the port,
TLine Manager will release it for use, if the port is available, or simulate a
+(disconnected) line, if the port is in use.
Type 4
O Unaware applications that do not support the Macintosh Communications Toolbox
X(do not provide an option for port selection). These applications will be forced to use
Vthe Data Port and treated like Type 3 applications. Using this type of application is
Udiscouraged, as they sometimes fail to close the port properly after use
disrupting
Goperation of Line Manager (or the entire system) and forcing a restart.
Set-Up Options:
UConfigure other Server-Type applications, such as ARA or DialUp, to use the ARA Port.
GNon-Server-Type applications should be configured to use the Data Port.
Without Line Manager
+Only one Server-Type application (PowerFax
PowerTalk Direct DialUp
HOMail) may remain active. Non-Server-Type applications such as MicroPhone
that
Odo not need to monitor the port continuously may be used to make outgoing calls
>when PowerFax is active even if Line Manager is not available.
Set-Up Options:
IWhen using the Apple Express Modem: The Express Modem implements its own
Vfeatures, similar to those of Line Manager, for call discrimination and sharing of the
Pserial port. When using the Express Modem more than one Server-Type application
Smay remain active. With the Express Modem connected to the GeoPort, configure data
0communication application(s) to use the GeoPort.
SOtherwise, only one active Server-Type application may be used. Other PMSAM
s, like
SPowerFax, can be made inactive by unchecking their boxes in the
command in
the Finder
s Special menu.

Turning On Line Manager
When you install PowerFax
6software, the Line Manager will default to Off even if
HPyour modem is able to provide the necessary call discrimination. To enable Line
Manager, install PowerFax, then:
KClick the
Other settings
button on the Outgoing info page of the PowerFax
Dconfiguration dialog in the Key Chain. Select the Connection panel.
TClick the On button for Line Manager. (If your modem does not support Line Manager,
this button will be inactive.)
RIf you are using Apple Remote Access (ARA), open the Remote Access setup panel and
uncheck the Answer calls
4checkbox. You should do this any time you turn Line
VManager on or off. This will prevent ARA from trying to open the modem port after the
Srestart (which would prevent Line Manager from accessing and controlling the port).
ARA can be set to answer again
after
the restart if Line Manager
is to hand-off calls.
NOTE:
EWhen using DialUp, select
from the Finder
s Special menu and
Kuncheck its box to disable it because it has no option for
not answering.
;After restarting, it will need to be re-enabled to be used.
Restart your computer.
QIf you have ARA or DialUp, open the
connection
setup dialog box, and select ARA
SPort in the port selection panel. After selecting the logical ARA Port, you may re
Cenable answering if you like, or originate calls whenever you wish.

PowerFax Error Codes
PowerFax Error Codes
OWhen PowerFax encounters an error in sending a fax the error is reported to the
RMailbox In Tray. There are two types of error reports: Mailbox errors and Letter
errors.
Mailbox Errors
MErrors that involve the interaction of the PowerFax gateway and the PowerTalk
Ssystem software are reported in the Mailbox In Tray or Out Tray as explained in the
Status
In Tray and Out Tray
section. An error icon will appear in the upper
Tright corner to indicate a problem sending the letter. Click the icon to review the
?problem report for the services that have encountered an error.
1There are three kinds of PowerTalk Mailbox error:
Correctable Errors
LOperation of the STF PowerFax Gateway will be suspended until the problem is
Ncorrected and the Resolve button is clicked. Restarting the computer may also
Qresolve some problems, but the error message will remain until the Resolve button
is clicked.
Informational
NOperation of the STF PowerFax Gateway is not suspended. Action is usually not
Qrequired. Clicking Resolve will make the message disappear, but has no effect on
the reported problem.
Warning
NOperation of the STF PowerFax Gateway is not suspended. Action may or may not
Tbe required. Clicking Resolve will make the message disappear, but has no effect on
the reported problem.
Letter Errors

HIThe solution to many common PowerFax errors will be included in the error
Qdescription. Occasionally, PowerFax will be unable to provide a verbal report.
UInstead, a numerical error code will appear in the error dialog. A table of specific
3PowerFax error codes follows later in this section.
NOTE:
JError codes between -1 and -24999 mean an Internal program or system error
Goccurred. The suggested corrective action is to restart the Macintosh.
